Called a mix of modern classical, free form jazz, heavy metal and atmospheric rock, Aaron Kerr’s Dissonant Creatures is the brainchild of cellist and composer Aaron Kerr.
Aaron released his debut solo cello CD Arco 71 in 2006 and was awarded a McKnight Foundation Fellowship for the compositions on the album. Following the release of his second album in 2009, Aaron took a new set and an improvisational band concept on the road and, in the process, Aaron Kerr’s Dissonant Creatures was born.
Music from Aaron’s albums have been featured in independent film projects and on NPR’s Science Friday program. Aaron Kerr and his ensemble perform regularly in the Twin Cities and tour throughout the Midwest.
Description of event:
AKDC is excited to be playing for the first time at Jazz Central. We have spent the past two years performing a monthly show at The Black Dog and are now getting the chance to play at other venues. We will be playing the end of April at the 2019 Eau Claire Jazz Fest and in Milwaukee for their Cellopalooza festival in October.
The band takes a classical approach to their sets: each set is organized to have a mix of open, composed, and arranged songs, and the sets do not change from show to show (this show will have some slight changes due to our substitute drummer, Jackson Kerr, sitting in). In addition, many of the songs are conducted and involve some combination of both written and improvised parts.
All the songs were composed and arranged by Aaron Kerr, who has worked with the band for ten years to perfect the music to meet the needs of the band. Three albums are now released that feature music of AKDC: Dissonant Creatures is a gothic studio album arranged and produced by Swallows’ members Tyson Allison and Jeff Crandall (also of AKDC). Union County Forever is a folk / modern classical crossover album featuring AKDC members Jeff Crandall on acoustic guitar and Mike Nordby on mandolin. Scorpio Rising: Live at the Picador is a live recording of the first incarnation of Aaron Kerr’s Dissonant Creatures from their 2009 tour. Aaron is currently finishing up an acoustic jazz influenced album, Odin, which again features AKDC members – this time Sean Egan on clarinet and Justin DeLeon on drums.
