Mitch Van Laar is a native-born trumpet player making his debut with The Mitch Van Laar Quintet. Mitch started playing the trumpet at 10 years old. He discovered jazz in the 7th grade. During high school he played and recorded with the All-State Jazz Bands. While performing with the Minnesota Youth Jazz Bands, Mitch played in The Montreux Jazz Festival and The North Sea Jazz Festival. During his time at The University of North Texas Mitch played and recorded with the 3 and 2′ O Clock Lab Bands as well as local bands in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Mitch studied under the direction on Tanya Darby, Allen Vizzutti, and Rodney Booth. Mitch returned from North Texas with a performance degree in Jazz Studies. He is currently living in the Twin Cities and playing in a variety of styles and genres including Jazz, Funk, Hip-hop, blues, and Brass Bands.

JCS invites a local jazz masters to play and direct new collaborations.
This performance is followed by a traditional jam session hosted by the featured artist. Novice and experienced, are invited to play and hone their skills.
