Rose Lewis and Friends

Rose Brzezinski Lewis, graduate of Lawrence University’s Conservatory of Music and member of the Downbeat awarding winning Lawrence University Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Fred Sturm, performed with such guest artists as Bobby McFerrin, Diane Reeves, Clark Terry, and Dizzy Gillespie. She studied jazz composition and arranging with Fred Sturm, orchestration with Howard Niblock, and later, counterpoint with Chris Granias at the MacPhail Center for Music.
In 1991, after 3 years of full time elementary and high school band directing, Rose began freelancing and over the years has performed with the Stan Bann Big Band, Rod Smith Big Band, Joe Bauer/Tarzan Zerbini Circus, Ringling Brothers Circus, Shrine Circus, Jerry O’Hagan Big Band, Cedar Avenue Big Band, Wolverines Classic Jazz Orchestra, Mankato Symphony, Sheldon Theater Brass Band, Children’s Theater, Guthrie Theater, various churches, and other local chamber groups, artists, and ensembles .
In 1991, Rose won the Minnesota Composers Forum’s Composer Commissioning Project and in 1992 her alma mater premiered Poppyseed Vinaigrette for jazz ensemble, strings, and voices. In 1992, Cessa Dolor was selected by the Society of Composers, Inc. to be premiered at their conference by the Texas Christian University Jazz Ensemble, and Just Ask was commissioned by the Minnetonka High School Jazz Ensemble.
She cofounded with Mike Krikava in the mid 1990s the Nova Jazz Orchestra, a lab band for performing and recording original compositions, and for several years was the arranger for Eagan/Eastview High School’s Encore musical revue. Sidelined for 16 years due to illness, she is now making her way back to creating and performing original compositions.
