Denny Carlson is a Chicago based Alto Saxophonist who received a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from DePaul University this past June. During the course of his schooling at DePaul he had the privilege to be under the tutelage of famed jazz drummer Dana Hall. He also studied privately with Dennis Carroll and Scott Burns, both staples in the Chicago jazz scene.
Denny grew up in Minneapolis and attended Southwest High where he and his longtime friend Levi
Schwartzberg formed The Cosmic Troubadours. Under the direction of band director Keith Liuzzi this
high school jazz combo would play at venues ranging from the Acadia Cafe, Jazz Central, Wild Tymes to
the old Artist Quarter. It’s been over 4 years since the Troubadours have played together, but they will be

Joining Denny will be the aforementioned vibraphonist and pianist Levi Schwartzberg. Levi just
graduated from the U of M and has been playing with groups such as Sound Skirmish, Davu Seru’s No
Territory Band, and Adam Linz’s Le Percheron, amongst others. On tenor sax is a gifted woodwind player
named Ryan Rosik. A few years back Ryan and Levi performed selections from Eric Dolphy’s Out to
Lunch! album at Orchestra Hall. On bass is Drew Stinson, a very versatile player who attended McNally
School of Music and performs regularly around the twin cities, notably with the Julian Manzara Quartet.
Ben Ehrlich rounds out the quintet on drums. Ben finished his undergraduate work at University of North
Texas in June and has moved back to the twin cities to play with numerous groups, including Sound
