The Pete Whitman X-tet was formed in summer of 2001 as recording project for the Twin Cities label Artegra. It was a great luxury to work with Artegra founder Warren Sampson and recording engineer John Scherf. This collaboration resulted in the super audio CD Where’s When? which was released in January of 2002. As a result of this CD, the group started to play a long- standing monthly gig at The Artists’ Quarter in downtown St. Paul.
The X-tet’s repertoire is made up of primarily originals by members and friends of the band. The style is pretty eclectic: tunes range from what might be compared to Thad Jones or Charles Mingus to Chick Corea or Pat Metheny. There are many compositions that the X-tet plays that are difficult to compare with other groups. We have our own sound!
