Hailing from Kansas City, The Sextet plays music to move to and be moved by. The bulk of their repertoire are original compositions and arrangements by bassist Robert Castillo. In the broader attempt to modernize jazz, Castillo fuses traditional jazz harmonies and structures with rhythms and grooves of today. The result is a sound that can be compared to contemporary groups such as Snarky Puppy, The Contemporary Noise Sextet, GoGo Penguin, and others.
The Sextet has recorded two albums, the former listed on the KMHD Portland Jazz Radio’s Top 10 albums of 2016 list. They have plans to record a third album this winter. To create their sound, the group is composed of soprano, tenor, and bari saxophones, along with a guitar, bass, and drum rhythm section.
