Saxophoinist Dave Brattain is a 20-year veteran of the Cedar Avenue Big Band and Vanguard Variety Ensemble, has toured the U.S. with Troupe America (1940s Radio Hour), and has been featured with pianist Ben Sidran. Locally, he’s played with the Paul Renz Quintet and JazzMN Big Band, as well as his own quartet. Currently Brattain is on the faculty of Wayzata High School.

EXPLOSION BIG BAND

Led by chief detonators Doug Haining, sax, and Scott Agster, trombone, the EXPLOSION big band draws from the area’s finest musicians. The EXPLOSION is ready to detonate with the classic sounds of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and more modern sounds of Thad Jones, Clare Fischer, Pat Metheny and others. The EXPLOSION ignites big band chestnuts, blasts into rock, erupts into swing, and will provide the BIG BANG at any concert or event. A big band of explosive magnitude, the EXPLOSION will get your feet tapping, your hands clapping and get you ready for lift off!

ADAM LARSON TRIO

Saxophonist-composer Adam Larson has been making waves as a bandleader in New York City for many years. Leading his group at venues such as Birdland, The Jazz Gallery, 55 Bar, Smalls, Dizzy’s, Kitano and several others, Larson keeps very active with his group in New York City and beyond. “The sort of musician who gets flagged early on as a promising talent and then hustles to meet every requirement for success” (Nate Chinen, NY Times), Larson brings a mix of standards and his contemporary, original compositions to Jazz Central Studios with a stellar band that includes bassist Bob Bowman and drummer John Kizilarmut. Larson will present music from his four existing albums as well as newly written material.

LYUBOMIR DENEV

$10 admission. $5 with student ID

Lyubomir Denev is one of the biggest names in contemporary Bulgarian music. He has written music for film and theater, and has made a successful international career as a solo jazz musician, playing at festivals in Paris, Oslo, Budapest, Berlin, among others. Denev is a recipient of numerous awards for his work as a composer – among those are “Sofia 1989”, “ASKEER 2001”, “Crystal Lyre 2006”, “Zlatna Rakla 2006”. The Bulgarian National Television has produced two documentaries about Denev’s works and his music has been performed across Europe and countries, such as Mexico, China, India, Egypt, Japan, Canada, and the United States.

This is Lyubomir Denev’s first visit to the Twin Cities, and he will be featured as well at the Fourteenth Balkanicus – Annual Concert of Balkan Contemporary Music on April 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Lloyd Ultan Recital Hall at the University of Minnesota. His new work Balkan Sounds and Landscapes, for clarinet, violin (gadulka), cello and marimba, was commissioned by the Balkanicus Ensemble.
